Universal diagnostics

A "universal" diagnostic tool is one that talks to every system in the car - not just the engine. Reading a check-engine code tells you one thing failed. Reading the whole car - ABS, airbags, transmission, body modules - tells you why, and whether the fault you're chasing is even where you think it is.

What changes between entry-level and professional tools

The gap isn't really about how many fault codes a device can read - most tools in this range read codes fine. It's about three things: how many modules it reaches, whether it can command a component rather than just report on it (bi-directional control), and whether it can write changes to a module after a repair (coding and adaptation). A €200 code reader and a €1,500 workshop tablet can both turn off the same warning light. Only one of them can tell you, before you buy a part, whether that part is actually the problem.

How to choose by how you'll use it

  • One car, occasional use - a four-system scanner (engine, ABS, airbag, transmission) covers the overwhelming majority of warning lights a private owner will ever see. You don't need bi-directional control or ECU coding for this.
  • Several cars, or you do your own repairs - full-system coverage plus service resets (oil, EPB, steering angle) starts to earn its price back the first time it saves a garage visit.
  • Professional workshop, daily diagnostic work - bi-directional control and ECU coding stop being nice-to-have and start being the reason a job stays in your bay instead of going to the dealer.

Autel, Launch or THINKCAR?

All three are genuine, warrantied manufacturer equipment - we don't carry anything else. Autel tends to lead on hardware and advanced diagnostics (topology mapping, J2534 programming on the higher-end models). Launch has historically competed hardest on coverage-per-euro across the broadest range of makes. THINKCAR shares engineering roots with Launch and is the most affordable route into full-system diagnostics, phone-based rather than a dedicated tablet. None of the three is "better" in the abstract - it depends which trade-off matches your work.
