TPMS sensor programming: when you need a new sensor and how it gets registered

Tyre pressure sensors don't last the life of the car. Batteries deplete after roughly 5-10 years, sensors get damaged when a tyre is fitted incorrectly, and even a healthy sensor stops talking to the car if you fit a new wheel or a spare that's never been paired. None of this is obvious until the TPMS light comes on and won't go off.

Why "just clear the light" doesn't work

A generic scan tool can turn the warning light off, but it comes back the next time the car checks tyre pressures - usually within a few minutes of driving. TPMS sensors are electronically registered to the vehicle; the car needs a tool that can talk to the sensor directly to actually fix the problem, not just silence the symptom.

Cloned or new - which do you need?

  • One sensor failed, the other three are fine - buy a blank sensor and clone it to match the ID of the working sensors on the same axle set. The car doesn't need to relearn anything.
  • Fitting a full new set, or the whole set has failed - program all four as new sensors, then run the vehicle's relearn procedure so the car accepts the new IDs.
  • Swapping between summer and winter wheels - if the second set has its own sensors, they need to be programmed once, the first time you fit them, then they just work every season after.

What you actually need to do this

Programming a TPMS sensor needs a tool with TPMS function - it reads and writes the sensor's radio ID, not just fault codes. On our range, that's the Autel MaxiCOM MK900TS or MaxiPRO MP900TS - both do full diagnostics as well, so it's not a single-purpose tool sitting in a drawer between jobs.

Rubber or metal valve when replacing a sensor?

Rubber is the right default for most cars - it's what the factory fits, it's cheaper, and it flexes instead of snapping if it catches a kerb. Metal only makes sense if the car came with a metal valve originally, or the customer specifically wants that look. We carry both: rubber valve and metal valve, 315/433 MHz, priced per sensor.
