OBDeleven or a universal scanner? What VW, Audi and Škoda owners should choose

If you drive a VW, Audi, Škoda or SEAT, you've probably faced the dilemma: buy a universal diagnostic tool or a specialised VAG tool? The short answer: it depends on what you actually want to do with it. Here's how to think about it.

What does a specialised VAG tool like OBDeleven do?

Tools like OBDeleven are Bluetooth adapters that give near dealer-level access to VAG vehicles from your phone: full diagnostics of every module, long coding, adaptations, and "one-click" activation of hidden factory functions (lighting modes, comfort features, instrument cluster options). We don't currently stock OBDeleven or similar VAG-specific coding tools - we focus on Autel, Launch and THINKCAR's universal platforms - but it's worth knowing what that category does before you decide what you actually need.

When a specialised VAG tool wins

  • You only own VAG group vehicle(s)
  • You want to do more than read fault codes - you want to activate hidden functions
  • You want a compact solution - the adapter fits in your glovebox

When a universal tool is the better buy

  • You need guided service procedures (DPF, injectors, EPB) across different makes, not just VAG
  • You don't want to depend on a phone - a standalone device with a screen is handier in the workshop
