Autel or Launch? How to choose between the two

It is the question we get more than any other. Two tools, similar prices, spec sheets that look almost identical - so which brand? Both are genuine, both are among the largest diagnostic manufacturers in the world, and neither is better in the abstract. Here is how we actually answer it.

The short version

Launch generally gives you more capability per euro. Autel generally gives you better hardware and greater depth at the top end. If budget is your binding constraint, Launch. If you need one specific advanced capability, Autel usually has it first.

1. Where Launch wins: price per feature

Model for model, Launch tends to deliver full-system diagnostics, service functions and coding at a lower price than the nearest Autel. The X431 CRP919E gives you every module in the car plus 31 service functions - the closest Autel equivalent costs noticeably more.

If you run a general workshop across mixed makes and need broad capability without a flagship budget, Launch is usually the more economical route to it.

2. Where Autel wins: the top of the range

Two capabilities in particular are worth paying for, if you need them:

• Topology mapping. The MaxiCOM Ultra Lite S and MaxiSYS Ultra draw the vehicle's module network as a live diagram and show you which module has stopped answering. That turns an afternoon of probing wires into a few minutes of reading a picture.
• J2534 ECU programming. On the MaxiSYS Elite II Pro and above, you can reprogram control units that would otherwise have to go to a dealer - work you can now invoice yourself.

Autel also tends to build the physically tougher hardware, which matters if the tool lives on a workshop floor rather than in a drawer.

3. Where it honestly makes no difference

For everyday diagnostic work - reading and clearing faults across every system, live data, service resets, bi-directional tests - a Launch CRP919E and an Autel MaxiCOM MK808BT PRO will both do the job properly. At this tier the brand argument is mostly noise. Choose on price, screen size, and which menu layout you prefer working in.

The question most buyers forget

Update costs. Both brands include a period of free updates and then charge annually, and the annual fee is not always proportional to the purchase price. A cheaper tool with expensive updates can cost more over three years than a dearer one with generous terms. The update policy is stated on every product page - read it before you compare two prices.

And if neither is the answer
